Overview
This project management training is aimed at your project managers, with or without experience, whatever your business sector. Its aim is to enable them to acquire the techniques, tools, know-how and interpersonal skills that make it possible to steer a project completely independently.
Why choose the Project management fundamentals course?
Many project managers coordinate people over whom they have no hierarchical authority: they then make progress through scoping, delegation and negotiation, three practices that the programme has them work on. The Project management fundamentals course thus trains team managers in an approach to project management based on functional levers for action rather than hierarchical ones.
The 3 days, in a virtual classroom, follow the course of a project, from scoping to leading meetings, by way of forming the team, deliverables, risks, the budget, the schedule and steering. No prerequisites are required. The course starts from the definitions and principles of project management, and the detail of each day appears in the Curriculum tab.
The first level of a pathway
This course opens a pathway of three complementary levels, with an approach based on progressive learning and operational support. It continues with Project management performance (level 2), then with Project Management Office (PMO): managing the project portfolio (level 3). If some of your project managers have already led projects, you can instead direct them towards level 2. For participants who would like it, operational coaching sessions can also supplement the course.
What your project teams take away from it
Your project managers leave with the "Project management" toolkit, which they have put into practice during the course and which remains usable immediately afterwards, so they do not have to start from a blank page when they return to their role. On the last day, each participant also builds their individual action plan. Open to all types of business sector, the course forms part of the offering of Excelia Business School's Executive Education Centre.
The skills targeted
At the end of the course, your project managers will be able to:
- Steer a project in all its dimensions
- Practise the necessary tools (scoping note, calendar, budget, risks, quality…)
- Integrate the human dimension of the project manager's role (delegation, negotiation, confrontation)
The human dimension is worked on throughout the three days: delegation on the first, negotiation on the second, the handling of disagreements on the third.
Curriculum
The course takes place over 3 days, or 21 hours, in a virtual classroom via Teams, and forms the first level of a pathway that has three.
How you learn
The three days alternate input and practical exercises:
- Short theoretical sequences, followed together
- Practical work in a small team of 3 to 4 learners
- A practice workbook provided in advance, which serves as a basis for the team exercises
- A "Project management" toolkit provided and put into practice
Educational activities punctuate each module, and a self-evaluation of learning outcomes closes the session.
Three days to move from framework to steering
The first day sets the framework of the project and forms the team, the second builds its deliverables, budget and schedule, the third takes charge of steering it through to the individual action plan. You will find the detail in the three sections below.
Day 1: scope the project and form the team
This first day teaches you to scope a project in writing, to form the team that will carry it and to delegate clear responsibilities to the team. Breaking the project down into tasks then gives you an overview of the work to be done.

- Write a scoping note
- Build your team and delegate responsibilities

Day 2: build the deliverables, the budget and the schedule
Deliverables, risks, budget, schedule: the second day has you get to grips with each of these elements of the project. You also practise communicating, negotiating and giving a team member feedback that motivates them.
Module titles
- Pedagogical warm-up
- Build the project deliverables
- Control the risks
- Estimate the budget
- Communicate and negotiate
- Give a team member motivating feedback
- Draw up the project schedule
Day 3: steer progress and lead the project
After understanding ROI (return on investment), you track the project's progress using a dashboard and reporting, handle disagreements and lead each type of meeting. The day ends with putting your individual action plan in place.
Module titles
- Pedagogical warm-up
- Understand ROI
- Steer the progress of the project
- Handle disagreements
- Create a dashboard and reporting
- Lead all meetings (launch, steering, review, one-to-one, etc.)

What the company gains from it
The remote format saves your project managers the cost and time of travel. This course is the first level of a pathway that was in fact designed to optimise costs and time for companies and trainees alike. The "Project management" toolkit provided during the course is of use to them as soon as they return to their role, and operational coaching remains available as a supplement for those who would like it. If you would prefer a pathway built entirely around your organisation, Excelia Business School also offers tailor-made in-company training.
At Excelia Executive Education, we offer personalised support to help every profile — company, employee, self-employed person or public sector employee — to make their training projects a reality by drawing on the most suitable funding schemes.
